Abstract

Under the influence of globalization, English is becoming more popular in Vietnam. Many Vietnamese, especially youngsters, like mixing English terms in their formal and informal communication. This language phenomenon is referred to as code mixing which is found to be quite common in Hoa Hoc Tro magazine, a magazine for teenagers published weekly and has great influence on Vietnamese youth. This study aims to find out the patterns and features of English terms mixed in the corpus. In six volumes of magazine investigated, there were 1379 English lexical items mixed; among which more than 90% are nouns while the rests are verbs and adjectives. Most of the words mixed belong to entertainment or IT topics.
