Abstract

According to many functional grammarians, the volition situation in the English language is identified as one of the subtypes of experiential situations (perception, cognition, emotion and volition). It is classified into the subtypes such as wanting, needing, intending, desiring, hoping and wishing. This article aims at describing the semantic structures of the English volition situation from the perspective of functional grammar, then comparing and contrasting it with the Vietnamese equivalents with a view to figuring out some similarities and differences.
