Diversity of fish species composition in the area of Co Chien estuary, Ben Tre province

Abstract
Based on identified results of samples collected in three surveys in 2011, 2012 and 2015, a total number of fish species found in the area of Co Chien estuary, Ben Tre province was 142 species belonging to 45 families of 11 different orders in two classes. In which, the order Perciformes is the most dominance of species composition with 70 species (making up 49.3% of total species), and Pleuronectiformes with 21 species (making up 14.79%). There is one order that contain only one family with one species: Gadiformes. According to different ecological groups, analysing results showed that demersal fishes predominate with 117 species (making up 82.4%), while pelagic fishes have 25 species (making up 17.6%); and brackishwater fishes are predominate with 101 species (making up 71.1%), and then saltwater fishes have 39 species (making up 27,5%), whereas there are only 2 species of freshwater fishes (making up 1.4%). In 142 fish species, there are 52 high economic value species (making up 36.62%), one species already listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (2007) by the level of VU (Vulnerable), and three species that were already listed by the level of NT (Near Threaten) in The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2014. Results of this study to contribute the initial data on fish species composition in the area of Co Chien estuary, Ben Tre province.
