Abstract

Workers in the paint and shoe industries often have to exposure with benzene, toluene. The goal of this study was to assess worker exposure levels with benzene, toluene, we have analysised their metabolites in urine by HPLC method and GC method. Hippuric acid and o-cresol has been used as a toluene exposure biomarker, trans trans muconic aicd (TT-MA) and phenol has been used as a benzene exposure biomarker. Results showed that 1.05 % of the study subjects had phenol concentration in urine exceeded limit value allowed, 13.68 % of the study subjects had TT-MA concentration in urine exceeded ACGIH’s limit values allowed (≥ 0.5 mg/g creatinine). There are not any study subjects TT-MA concentration in urine exceeded Vietnam’s limit values allowed (≥ 0.5 g/g creatinine). Assess the level of exposure to toluene, results analysis hipuric acid in urine showed that the hippuric acid concentrations below the maximal biologic permissible level, but there are 37.89 % of the study subjects had o-crsol concentration in urine exceeded ACGIH’s limit values allowed and Vietnam’s limit values allowed. This results suggest a need for a revision of the TT-MA concentration limit value in urine. Assess the level of exposure to toluene should use the o-cresol index to protect workers.
