Application of Gamma Irradiation for Recycling Waste Plastic Bag
Main Article Content
Abstract
This work conducted the application of gamma irradiation to enhance the mechanical and physico-chemical properties of waste plastic bags (WPBs). WPBs pellets were irradiated at doses ranging from 10 to 30 kGy and characterized. Based on the mechanical properties results recorded, WPBs with a dose of 15 kGy was suitable for treating WPBs. Notably, the melting flow index, impact strength, and tensile strength of irradiated WPBs (iWPBs) reach ca. 70-80% of those of virgin PE. Furthermore, FTIR spectra analysis indicated that the irradiation doses above 15 kGy resulted in the formation of C=O and O-H groups, suggesting progressive degradation of the irradiated WPBs. This study demonstrates an efficient and environmentally friendly approach to recycling WPBs and reducing environmental impact
