Abstract

Vietnamology (Vietnamologie) or Vietnamese Studies (Etudes Vietnamiennes) is a
discipline specialized in studying the Vietnamese nation, people, history and culture.
Vietnamology should be considered Vietnamese Studies both at home and abroad.
Historically. Vietnamology was created with the first notes and descriptions about
Vietnam and has gone through three periods. During the near-modern history,
Vietnamology was formed and developed within the Western countries’ discipline of
Orientalism which was closely linked to Chinese and Indian Studies. It was not until the contemporary history following the August Revolution in 1945 that Vietnamology was regarded as a scientific discipline comprising Vietnamese studies both at home and abroad. The report gives a brief account on Vietnamology’s development stages, its main trends and academic accomplishments.
Determined by geographic, historic and cultural factors, Vietnam has always existed
and developed in close connection with other countries and cultures of Southeast Asia, East Asia and the world. Therefore, Vietnamologv's approach is to study Vietnam in its interactions with the region and the world. Nowadays, thanks to Vietnam's great achievements in the struggle for national liberation and unification as well as in the cause of renovation and international integration. Vietnamology has seen vigorous development in Vietnam and attracted keen interest of many scholars around the world. The report also mentions the development of Vietnamology over the recent period, the need to enhance international exchanges in Vietnamese study, and a number of specific recommendations.
