Abstract

The paper analyzes various socio-economic aspects of child labor, such issues as classification of children’s work, the state, nature, socio-economic roots of child labor and its impacts upon children’s development. The major question raised for discussion is why the rate of working children has fastly increased since the begining of economic reforms; if it was related to the high school drop-out rate and increasing unemployment during these years and how to cope with this problem. Based on a theoretical suggestion by K.Marx, the paper proposes to approach the issues of child labor in Vietnam in relation to structural changes of socio-economic system since the economic reforms shifting the centrally-planned economy to a marketoriented one. Furthermore, the paper analyzes the impacts of work upon the child development and comes to suggest an analytical framework of solutions to support working children.
