Abstract
There are many ways to show a negative idea such as the use of the negative
operators, constructions, ... in language. However, negation has many special
varieties of which are double negation and surplus negation.
In both Vietnamese and English, there are the ways to form double negation
(DN) by using 2 negative operators which influence each other. In this case, in
meaning, it ii? logically interpreted as positive meaning, often used in a pragmatic
and stylistic purpose. Nevertheless, Vietnamese and English have DN which still
has negative meaning. Some grammarians have argued that they are illogical and
used din non-satndard but in reality they are used so much that they have become
well-conventionalised.
