Abstract

Faculty development is a fundamental condition for member universities of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) to realize their strategic orientation toward research-intensive higher education institutions. This paper examines the current situation of faculty development at nine VNU member universities in terms of faculty competencies, workforce planning, recruitment, training and professional development, evaluation and screening, faculty retention, incentive policies, and working environment. The study employed questionnaire surveys, document analysis, synthesis, and descriptive statistics. The survey sample included 714 respondents, comprising 580 lecturers and 134 educational managers. The findings indicate that faculty development activities were generally rated at a high level. Working environment, recruitment, training and development, and faculty retention policies were among the most positively evaluated aspects. However, several areas require further improvement, including periodic review of workforce planning, post-recruitment monitoring, evaluation of training outcomes, use of evaluation results, and development of clear academic career pathways. Based on these findings, the paper proposes several managerial implications for improving faculty development in response to the requirements of research-oriented universities.
